We at Horizon Accountants spent this past year in strategic planning utilizing the Blue Ocean methodology. Out of this time came an unexpected discovery. We as CPAs are uniquely positioned to redefine our profession based on what we really are. We realized that as CPAs we have acquired a special skill set to become trusted marketplace advisors.

Entrepreneurs

The entrepreneur of the 21st century will be required to become a unique individual. In our fast pace of outsourcing in service based industries, only the creative or value-added work will remain. Those industries that require a manufacturing base or local distribution model such as farming, food and bulky goods will remain. Key words for service type industries will be analysis, creativity, experience, and problem solving. The entrepreneur of our times will need to combine leadership or execution with relationships to maximize creative approaches to solve problems or meet needs of a new world order.

The old style of a heavy top down leadership model is being slowly replaced by more horizontal or collaborative models. As the older generation dies off the younger generation, that is more relational, adapts to the political climates they are creating. As Thomas Friedman states in his book The World is Flat, "There is a new found power for individuals to collaborate and compete globally". One day we may see the disappearance of nation-states to be replaced with regional alliances of like minded individuals. A method to track and record these high speed transactions that move across continents may emerge. Most likely combining real time access with the Global Positioning System and stored and transmitted via a computer chip. Wow, the book of Revelation does not seem so distant and wacked anymore!
